New Corporate Office for Batory

We are thrilled to announce that Batory Foods will be relocating our corporate headquarters to Rosemont, Illinois, in September 2018. It is a big move for us, though it may not be a far one - the new office building is just down the block from our current location. After 24 years at our Des Plaines office building, we have outgrown the space. President Ron Friedman is looking forward to having all employees on the same floor again!

We moved into the Des Plaines office building in 1994 when Batory had just 85 employees, nationwide, across three locations – Des Plaines and Elk Grove in Illinois, and Hopkins, Minnesota. Today, Batory has nearly 500 team members across North America, with over 100 working out of the corporate office. The increasing number of desks eventually lead to the division of the team across two separate floors.

The new Rosemont, IL office space, located at 10255 W. Higgins Road, Suite 500, will allow for the entire team to share the same floor. All phone numbers, email addresses and other contact information will remain unchanged.

We are looking forward to settling into our fresh, new space. The move is expected to be completed by the 17th of September 2018.

Fiberstar Selects Batory as Western Distributor

Fiberstar, Inc., a global leader of natural, functional fibers entered into a distribution agreement with Batory Foods to expand the sales bandwidth across the Western United States.

Over the years, Fiberstar added capacity, introduced new Citri-Fi® products and entered into new categories. To increase the sales momentum and to penetrate the food and beverage market, Fiberstar partnered up with Batory Foods.

“Batory Foods has an excellent track record within the food and beverage market,” says John Haen, President and CEO of Fiberstar. "We are pleased to have Batory Foods as our Western Distributor. They will complement our specialty ingredient business and provide us the additional sales bandwidth.”

Fiberstar sells Citri-Fi, a natural fiber produced from citrus fruit. The patented process opens up the fiber to create high surface area which lends itself to high water holding capacity and emulsification properties. This natural fiber contains both insoluble and soluble fiber with high amounts of pectin which makes this fiber one of the best, functional fibers on the market. One of the key benefits is its ability to hold onto water and oil, naturally, with stabilizing benefits in some of the most challenging food processing conditions. Citri-Fi’s stability is superior versus many other hydrocolloids such as starches, gums and chemical stabilizers. Citri-Fi also provides textural, nutritional and cost benefits to meats, bakery, sauces, dairy and beverages.

Three product lines in the portfolio include the 100 series (native citrus fiber), 200 series (citrus fiber co-processed with guar gum) and the 300 series (citrus fiber co-processed with xanthan gum). The 200 and 300 series are useful in applications requiring additional viscosity.

Because Citri-Fi can be labeled as citrus fiber, dried citrus pulp or citrus flour, and is approved for use in many meat and poultry applications, it resonates well within the clean label market. Citri-Fi also qualifies as a fiber under the new FDA ruling. This natural fiber can replace starches, gums, emulsifiers and chemical stabilizers, depending on the application. In addition, this natural fiber is non-GMO and allergen-free and the 100 product line requires no E-number labeling.

Des Plaines, IL. ― Batory Foods, a leading national distributor of high-quality food ingredients, will be hosting a Solutions Workshop for the Supply & Value Chain Center (SVCC) and Chicagoland Food and Beverage Network on February 22nd. The workshop will begin with special guest presentations to address the developing changes in the transportation industry. This will be followed by small group discussions.

Vito Parise, Group Director of Transportation at Batory Foods, will be speaking as a special guest to provide insight into the challenges of the modern transportation industry, as well as discuss some of the innovative solutions that are available today. In his presentation Vito will address the deficit trends of new to retiring drivers, challenges of the current load-to-driver ratio, possible implications of ELD’s, industry projections for the next five years, and the benefits of collaboration and cooperation.

In addition to his role at Batory Foods, Vito holds a Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Transportation Management, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and has 27 years of experience in the transportation and distribution industries. He has been an active member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals for 23 years and has received highest awards from his employers for his work several times.

The event is open to SVCC and Chicagoland Food & Beverage Network members for $35 and to the public for a $50 fee. It will be held from 7:30am to 10am on February 22nd at Batory Foods Corporate Headquarters, 1700 E. Higgins Rd., Suite 300, Des Plaines, IL 60018.

Batory Manager Speaking at Long Island IFT Meeting

Batory Foods is proud to announce that Amy Gililand, a Batory Technical Service Manager, will be speaking on trends, types, and applications of vegetable proteins at an upcoming meeting for the Long Island Institute of Food Technologists.

Protein ingredients are in high demand, as over two thirds of people aim to consume moderate to high amounts of protein, according to a study by Datamonitor, and since 54% of people globally eat low or no-meat diets, vegetable proteins have taken a particularly strong role in the market. Now more than ever it is crucial to stay informed as new trends evolve.

Amy is a valued member of the Batory team, with more than 25 years of experience in the industry and a B.S. in Chemistry, Foods and Nutrition, as well as an M.S. in Applied Chemistry. Amy has held positions in product development, analytical chemistry, research and development management, and technical service. An active member of the IFT organization, Amy has also served as the program lead for Food, Health, and Nutritional tracks at several recent IFT events.

“Honey-gate”: What you need to know about Illegally Transshipped and Adulterated Honey

The past five to ten years have been epic in the honey market. Companies have been found guilty of adulterated and illegally transshipped honey, associated people have been arrested, the market is seeing an unjustified surplus of product and Colony Collapse Disorder has cost the lives of many a poor bee. With all the buzz, Batory Foods aims to keep you well informed as new market indicators emerge.

In Batory’s May 2016 Honey Market Update, we reported that, for the first time in seven years, the honey supply is keeping up with demand. We noted that the domestic crop is only able to provide one third of what the U.S. consumes. And we identified some of the major exporting countries, which, in 2015, accounted for about 365 million pounds of imported material. This information applied to widely used conventional amber and light amber honey, with the exception of specialty honey such as organic, fair-trade, orange blossom, clover sourced and certified non-GMO honey.

DAIRY COMMODITIES UPDATE

September 12, 2016

The US has a lot of milk. Milk production here has kept up a steady pace this year. Through July, milk production gained 1.4% year-over-year. California and the Southwest were in negative territory through much of the early part of the year, while the upper Midwest was showing tremendous gains. Those factors, coupled together, signaled to the market average production for 2016.

Over the last two months, however, the Southwest reversed course, posting gains. While not in positive territory, California was down only 0.8% in July. To give some perspective, a production number of -0.8% was the best for California since 2014. This trend points to stronger numbers through the remainder of 2016.

Batory Foods Breaks Ground on Wilmington, IL, Distribution and Handling Facility

June 13, 2016

Plan Incorporates Cutting-Edge Technology and Sustainable Design Elements

On May 16, 2016, Batory Foods broke ground on the construction of a 678,000-square-foot facility in Wilmington, IL. At a groundbreaking ceremony and reception at the construction site, the food ingredients distribution company introduced the community to Batory’s work and its plans for the site.

Alston Construction, headquartered in Lisle, IL, and Chicago-based Ridge Development are managing construction and development.

“This Wilmington handling and distribution center will be the flagship in the Batory organization,” said Ron Friedman, President, Batory, during the opening ceremony. “It will set the standard for efficiency and food safety throughout the food industry.”

Wilmington’s Mayor J. Marty Orr offered an inspiring message about the contributions Batory will make to the city. Fred Dingraudo, VP of Operations, Batory, thanked Wilmington officials for their support, including those in attendance: City Administrator Tony Graff, Police Chief Phillip Arnold and Fire Chief Tim Zlomie.

Jessica Stoja, Batory’s Operations Project Manager, shared the company’s vision for the future: The facility will incorporate cutting-edge technology and embrace environmentally responsible design elements, like remote-sensor LED lighting and electric car charging stations. With technologies in place to stay ahead of the regulatory curve, the site will seek to earn C-TPAT Certification and OSHA VPP status for Employee Safety.

“Batory is financially strong, an industry leader, and is committed to social responsibility,” said Stoja. “We are determined to become an integral part of this community, and we will continue to expand opportunity within the City of Wilmington and throughout Will County.”

The distribution center will perform two distinct operating functions: The building’s north end will be a full service distribution center. A portion of distribution from Batory’s Oakley, IL, facility will move to Wilmington. As the remaining distribution services will stay in place at Oakley, this represents an expansion of Batory’s capabilities.

In the building’s south end, Batory will provide third party logistics (3PL) services to Fonterra, a leading multinational dairy company with roots in New Zealand, beginning November 2016. Staffed entirely by Batory Foods employees, Batory will receive material directly from New Zealand, managing the inbound and outbound services related to that inventory.

To launch what will be sustained community involvement in Wilmington, Batory is sponsoring a charity basketball event this October. The fundraiser will support the addition of a canine member to the Wilmington police force. Batory is also a proud sponsor of the Wilmington Bobcats, a nonprofit youth tackle football and cheerleading organization. The sponsorship helps fund uniforms, equipment and facility maintenance and upgrades.

Dairy Commodities Update

Milk Production
There is a lot of milk out there. The European Union is still producing milk. Despite falling farmgate prices and stocks moving into intervention, dairy farmers are still putting up huge numbers. EU output on a January-to-January basis grew over 5%. One publication compared that to a US growth of almost 7% and a whopping 35% or more in New Zealand. This is a lot of milk. There is talk about allowing voluntary supply controls by
countries. This would be a return, to some degree, of a form of quotas that the European Union just jettisoned.

US production grew tepidly at 1%, led again by the Midwest at 4.3%. California and the Southwest remain in the negatives. The Northeast showed strong output at 2.5%. New Zealand’s output continues to be hampered in part by poor commodity prices and poor returns at the farm level. Farmers are expected to dry off cows early rather than limp along with the feed, labor and energy expenses associated
with milking. If there isn’t a turnaround in pricing soon, they could also see an increase in culling.


We have entered into an extended period of very low pricing in the powder markets. Both nonfat and whey continue to hover at lows not seen in years or, in the case of nonfat, ever. Producers note some signs of a potential price increase...

Dairy Commodities Update

April 18, 2016

We started 2016 the way we ended 2015, with nonfat dry milk and whey languishing at low CME and Dairy Market News reported prices, whey proteins in a slump and the butter market perplexing us all. US milk production in the opening of 2016 mirrors the end of 2015, with production good-to-strong in the Midwest and East and poor in the West and Southwest.

2015 saw the end of the European Union’s more than 30- year run with a Central Planning style dairy quota system. This frees up farmers to produce what they want without fear of penalty, allowing the market to dictate price and production. That is said slightly tongue-in-cheek. They still have a government-supported intervention program that buys milk when it falls to a set price, not unlike our old Commodity Credit Corporation that would by powder at a default price. The US eliminated that program in favor of farmer-purchased margin protection insurance.

Des Plaines, Ill.―Batory Foods has been named an authorized distributor for the Corbion product line, including lactic acid, lactic acid derivatives and lactides. The U.S.-produced Corbion products span functions―including preservation, flavor enhancement, pH regulation and mineral fortification―across meat and poultry, dairy, beverage, confectionery, nutritional foods, fruits and vegetables and more.

This development is the natural progression of the flourishing relationship Batory and Corbion have enjoyed for years. Today, Corbion can focus on its core business, while Batory—with its multiple warehouses across the U.S.―will manage the needs of customers with a demand for less-than-truckload shipments.

BATORY FOODS TO OPEN STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY IN WILMINGTON, IL

Des Plaines, Ill.―This May, Batory Foods breaks ground on a 678,000-square-foot facility in Wilmington, IL. There, Batory will launch a new line of business, providing third party logistics services to key suppliers, beginning November 2016.

Fonterra, a leading multinational dairy company, chose Batory as its new third-party logistics provider in Illinois and will be serviced out of this new location. As Fonterra’s largest U.S. distributor, Batory is uniquely positioned to provide a superior third-party logistics service experience.

Outfitted in state-of-the-art technology, the facility will stay ahead of the regulatory curve, including increased regulation from the Food Safety Modernization Act and regulating bodies involved in both Quality and Employee Safety.

“Not only does the technology give us an edge from a business perspective,” says Jessica Stoja, Operations Project Manager, Batory. “It allows us to meet and exceed world-class standards in food safety, security and employee safety.”

Some technology upgrades will include custom-built food grade dock packages, which bolster environmental controls and provide increased food safety. These allow trailer seals to be both sealed and unsealed inside the facility. Yard managements and an automatic gate system will decrease carrier cycle time on-site and increase throughput, providing up-to-the-minute accuracy in inventory availability. The distribution center will be C-TPAT Certified.

The site will also include features to support wellness among the company’s most valuable resources: its people. An employee walking track and outdoor employee amenities space will enhance the Employee Wellness program and overall employee engagement.

2015 FDA Ruling on Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHO’s)

This June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that partially hydrogenated oils (PHO's) are not generally recognized as safe (GRAS) in human food. The ruling effectively prohibits the use of PHO's in human food, introducing daunting reformulation issues for many applications. Products that contain PHO's must become compliant by June 18, 2018.

June 2015 Dairy Commodities Update

The “plenty of milk” narrative continues. Earlier in the year, forecasts showed an abundant milk supply. It also showed waning demand. Taken together, those trends conspire to tell a story of ample milk on the global market.

While New Zealand production period is over, its overall results were a sound 2.2% growth. The EU is finally operating quota free, allowing dairy farmers to produce what they want. Early in the year, while the quotas were in effect, dairy production in Europe was restricted to avoid quota overruns and the imposition of fines. Post-quota production indications, however, show building supplies. Certainly, herd numbers are building, with the majority of dairy countries adding head. US milk product expanded a healthy 1.7% in the first quarter of 2015. There was some pull back in March but output remained robust as we passed through the traditional peak production period of spring flush.

Once the dominion primarily of sports nutrition, “high protein” is an opportunity no formulator can afford to ignore—whether you’re a functional food purveyor or food and beverage marketer.

In 2015 and beyond, the formulators who stand to win understand that consumers’ appetite for protein doesn’t stop at the supplement store. Look no further than pharmacy shelves, which bow under the weight of protein shakes and bars. In the grocery store, protein claims have moved beyond traditional realms like dairy. The aisles now teem with cereals, baked goods and beverages (even pet foods and dressings) making “high protein” claims. That’s to say nothing of the glossy magazines putting protein in their headlines.


What’s driving the protein passion? Credit a surge in health and wellness awareness, as well as ever more sophisticated exercise and nutrition science. The extreme protein diet craze of the early 2000s has given way to a better-informed consumer base. Fortunately, people no longer dine on bacon and cheese all day. But they have developed what you might call a “protein IQ,” replacing carbohydrates with protein-based energy sources for the latter’s wellness edge. 

All of this dovetails with the phenomenal success of the sports nutrition market, which has outperformed all other consumer health categories globally, according to Euromonitor. Within sports nutrition, protein is by far the fastest growing market. To capture their fair share of this success, mainstream brands have taken up the protein mantle. And why wouldn’t they?

In the main milk-producing areas of the world, specifically the EU and New Zealand, we have seen a striking turnaround in the amount of milk production. Many of us remember the recent double whammy: a production-ending early drought in New Zealand during a cold, wet spring and government-imposed milk production quotas that kept milk production numbers in the EU dramatically low. The US market became the source to the world for butter and SMP. We are looking at a slightly different picture today.
